Benny Parsons captured the first of his two NASCAR Winston Cup
victories at the Fairgrounds. The Ellerbe, NC driver moved
into first place on lap 331 when leader Buddy Baker's engine expired. Neil Bonnett won the pole position for
the race in Bobby Allison's Roger Penske owned CAM2 Mercury.
Allison was injured during a race at Elko, Minnesota the weekend
before the Nashville 420. He suffered broken ribs, several
broken toes and facial lacerations as a result of the incident. Allison would be relieved at the start
of the event by Bonnett.
Making only his sixth career Winston Cup Grand
National start, Skip Manning would record his first top-ten
finish.
Bobby Wawak would record his first
top-ten finish in NASCAR Winston Cup competition since the 1967
National 500 at Charlotte. Buddy
Baker dominated the race until he was sidelined with a blown
engine on lap 331.
Sterling Marlin, 18 year-old son of
veteran driver Coo Coo Marlin, relieved his father in the 14 car
and finished a strong second place. The younger Marlin ran his
first Winston Cup race at the speedway in May. Sterling would go
to compete in 748 CUP races with 10 victories, including the
1994 and 1995 Daytona 500's.
Jabe Thomas would record the last of his 10
starts at Nashville. Bill Elliot would record
his first of seven starts at Nashville. Elliot would
return to Fairgrounds Speedway in 2021 with the SRX Series.
His son, Chase Elliot, would win the event.
